The client wanted ideas for a unique event gift for a fantasy book club event. The Old Kingdom is a young adult book series created by Garth Nix that has sold over five million books worldwide and translated into 49 languages, and happens to be the organizer's favorite book. The design of the covers began with establishing a custom font inspired by Arabic calligraphy and illuminated script. All of the illustrations are hand painted in gouache to give a traditional feel then uploaded in photoshop to apply textures and layers of detail that give them a modern look and feel.
