---|---|---|---|
Personal Project | Queer editorial | Graphic Designer | Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator |
OVERVIEW |
Gruff is a modern, irreverent magazine representing the Bear culture within the Gay community. The editor endeavors to provide a magazine which speaks the truth and exposes the rough beauty of this culture, and hopes to appeal to spunky and fabulous men 25-40 who exemplify Bear Pride. TRANSLATION The design draws inspiration from the 90s playful design exemplified by Paula Scher and rejects stereotypes of big lumberjack hipster aesthetics. Leaning towards a whimsical display font, like Blenny, gives headlines high contrast and soft curves, demanding attention. Paired with Freight's sharp even serif and Muli's multi faceted uses, the magazine emits an eclectic harmony. The use of lowercase freight in the logo gives a friendly edge with a few customizations to take it away from a typed feel. Articles use structured grids to create unstructured appeal, playing on composition and tension to reflect intent and emotion of the works written. |
HIGHLIGHTS |
the conventionally attractive gay men get a lot of attention, Bears deserve just as much love! |
